Twelve Talents Wanted for the National Round of the 63rd Mathematical Olympiad in Flensburg!

An intensive week of learning and competition lies behind 36 mathematical talents from all over Rhineland-Palatinate. The pupils, selected from a pool of 1500 participants in the school round, took part in the mathematics camp at the »Mathematics« department of the Rhineland-Palatinate Technical University of Kaiserslautern-Landau (RPTU). For twelve of them, the motto in June is: We're going to Flensburg! The winners were announced at the graduation ceremony at the Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Mathematics ITWM on March 15, 2024.

The choice of venue is no coincidence, but a conscious decision based on many years of support and cooperation. The Kaiserslautern Mathematics Institute has been actively and extensively involved in supporting young talent for many years. It supports the mathematics camp in terms of content, personnel and funding. In addition, the Felix Klein Center for Mathematics, which serves as an umbrella organization for the Fraunhofer ITWM and the Department of Mathematics at RPTU, sponsors the camp and offers talented mathematicians who decide to study at Kaiserslautern University the opportunity to apply for one of its generous scholarships. Quite a few former scholarship holders now work at the Fraunhofer ITWM.

»For Me, You Are All Winners!«

The camp is organized by the state representative for Mathematics Olympiads, senior teacher Steffen Marhold from Westerwald-Gymnasium Altenkirchen, Henry Jäger from the »Mathematics« department at RPTU in Kaiserslautern and director of studies Matthias Reichel from Lise-Meitner Gymnasium in Maxdorf.

Steffen Marhold sees all participants as winners: »You are the best in the whole of Rhineland-Palatinate! You left 1500 others behind you and have already demonstrated your knowledge.«

During the week-long training camp, the students from grades seven to twelve delved into a wide range of topics: From number theory and circular geometry to the invariance principle and combinatorics, they gained a great deal of insight into mathematical areas. The final part was a written exam that highlighted the participants in the national round.

Ready for the Journey Ahead

Prof. Dr. Ralf Korn, consultant at the Fraunhofer ITWM and professor at the RPTU, welcomed the young people together with their parents to the ceremonial lecture at the Institute of Mathematics. In the end, the winners were announced. The twelve winners include five from Mainz-Gonsenheim, two from Mainz and one each from Mayen, Simmern, Trier, Neuwied and Alzey.

Together with four reservists, they will first travel to Trier for more detailed preparation before taking part in the national round of the Mathematical Olympiad in Flensburg in June.
